The first two paragraphs were very relatable. There is so many options now in today’s world. There are too many options to choose from. She was struggling to find the right pair of jeans and i struggle to find the right pair of jeans too. But not only with jeans, but with what to eat what to wear when to exercise I have problems making decisions in general.
“
However, by vastly
expanding the range of choices, they had also created a new problem that needed to be solved. Before these options were available, a
buyer like myself had to settle for an imperfect fit, but at least purchasing jeans was a five-minute affair. Now it was a complex decision in which I was forced to invest time, energy, and no small
amount of self-doubt, anxiety, and dread.” Her mindset for stores to have more options is a little on the negative side I believe. But she is correct to an extent you do spend more time on what pair of jeans is right for yourself. The Author is basically making a claim that we have way too many options therefore causing us to feel overwhelmed and may lead to clinical depression. That if we tend to have too many options or choices to make that we may somehow tend to choose something we did not want at first because we were anxious about making the choice.
Now I will have to disagree with the author just a little. I full heartily believe that we should be able to have many and a lot of choices. Just because it makes people overwhelmed or insecure is their problem. Choices is what helps a person grow. If we did not have choices then we would just be still almost floating around in the world.
Choices are a fundamental thing in humans. Yes life may be easier if we had less of choices and decisions to make, but it would also be more boring. I actually like having options and being able to try something different. I completely understand what the author is trying to say, but I do disagree with them.. Maybe it is my modern brain talking against their boomer brain. Choices and decision making is just very important to growing up. It helps all of us be more unique and different from one another. Which is what we want we want to be equally unique. I believe we are doing a fine job at that.
It is clear that many professional sports players make a lot more than the people sacrificing their lives for the our nation. Which is very unfair. The sports teams were charging the military? I could be confused while reading this passage but what? They already make enough. “NFL players often remained in the locker room during the national anthem” says the author. They were supporting the troops. But the troops had to pay them money to do it? “The team charged the National Guard $10,000 for a “promotion to recognize soldiers and their families and provide 12 vendor passes during each four Brewers home games” “The Brewers charged $7,500 for the honor of a service member throwing out the first pitch” These two statements are actually very new information for me. This whole time I thought the sports team were supporting and recognizing the military out of respect and the costs were or would be essentially free. WHY IS THE MILITARY PAYING ORGANIZATIONS TO SHOW TRIBUTE. Am I being wrong if i state that our tax paying dollars do go to the military. Why are they spending so much of our money to show false recognizance. “They were all in on it :NASCAR, MLB, the NBA, the NFL, NHL, MLS, and the NCAA.” “The military was using sports to sell the business of war.” Business of war? what I’m actually confused at this point. Are they trying to recruit people to go into the military? They are not trying to make more money that is for sure they keep giving it to all the sports teams and they are making the good money living easy with their well paid incomes. In this passage the author is trying to put more awareness on what really may be going on behind the scenes. From now on I believe we should all think harder and deeper about who or what may be getting paid where is our money going to? how is it being spent? Reading the paragraph the author sure did open my eyes behind the heart wrenching display of military on the sports fields. It was all paid for by them. They are just making professional sport players more richer. Its very scandalous to me.
For any junk-food or fast food brand. They have to sell their products to the world. Any and Every business wants to make profit off of their product. In the case of Nestle and Coco-cola and other allied brands they are all in competition with each other of who can sell the most or who can make the most profit. The only thing is what they are selling is not so good for human beings to digest in large quantities and have horrible emotional and physical effects to the body.
“A chemist by training with a doctoral degree in food science, Behnke became Pillsbury’s chief technical officer in 1979 and was instrumental in creating a
long line of hit products, including microwaveable popcorn. He deeply admired Pillsbury but in recent years had grown troubled by pictures of obese
children suffering from diabetes and the earliest signs of hypertension and heart disease.” The people working for the major companies were feeling more and more guilty for being the cause of the problem. They can make the food have addicting chemicals in them making people want it more and more. Causing all of the health issues that they were seeing at the time.
“As he spoke, Mudd clicked through a deck of slides — 114 in all — projected on a large screen behind him. The figures were staggering. More than half of
American adults were now considered overweight, with nearly one-quarter of the adult population — 40 million people — clinically defined as obese.
Among children, the rates had more than doubled since 1980, and the number of kids considered obese had shot past 12 million. (This was still only 1999;
the nation’s obesity rates would climb much higher.) Food manufacturers were now being blamed for the problem from all sides — academia, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. The secretary of agriculture, over whom the
industry had long held sway, had recently called obesity a “national epidemic” These statistics are outrageous and to think I wasn’t even born yet at this time. Now we have places like McDonald’s causing more health issues there more fast food chains then ever before and the most they have come up with is yes this bad for you, but its really up to you to know whats bad for you and what is not. They have pulled back the use of salt, sugar and fat. But in today’s world there is bigger problems with having to do with self control. There are little creatures that live inside of us. They cause the feeling of cravings when you have too much salt, sugar or fat often in junk food it creates more and more of these little creatures. Making us hungry and crave for junk food. In the Article it is the solution to hold back on Salt, Sugar, and Fats. But there is no limit on how much a person is allowed to consume. In the article they discuss how they can alter drinks and food to make it the perfect version. But its not that simple. There is more to food eating and drink drinking. People need a healthy diet. I have noticed as time went on now in the 2020s as there are more fast food and UN-healthy food lines coming and going. there are healthy food places like SkinnyFats where you can eat healthy or fat. Greens and Proteins is another healthy place to eat Bowlology is a good example as well as time moves along there are more and more positive and healthy food places being made. They can very well be the future as they get more and more popular. This article is pretty old. But it still holds a lot of current issues in today’s society.
“as a result” talks about how you should make your sentences connect. and went over the use of transitions ” you need not only to connect your sentences and paragraphs to each other, but also to mark the kind of connection you are making” Transitions help your readers or audience know if you are “echoing a previous sentence or adding something new” says the author. The use of pointing words is another way to connect parts of a sentence or paragraph is using words like “those” “their” and “such” for an example to help structures connect. You should also try and repeat key terms and phrases so your audience can fallow what you are trying to get across to them. You should aslo repaet yourself but with a difference which means repeating what you ssaid but with a slightly different way to avoid being montone says the author.
“you mean I can just say it that way” says that you can blend academic and colloquial styles by saying something and then quoting it afterwards to give it a unique style. You can also use a translation recipe which is ” state the point in acedemic language, then translate the point into everyday language.” says the author so You would have to state the authors sentence and then put it in your own terms so your audience that you are targetting can understand what you are saying. You can use self translation as well which is claifying others or even clarifying yourself on what was said. You should use everyday language as a thinking tool so you can further your knowledge on how to do it for your readers.
“but dont get me wrong” You can use metacommentary to clarify and elaborate sometimes no matter how clear and direct you can be your readers can still take what you are saying and it not be how you meant it. Using metacommentary wil help you develope new thoughts and ideas by writing down everything that you think when reading something or brainstorming.
“he says contends” “one of the most imporatant writing process is revision” says the author. Repeat what the other person says. and that you can disagree or agree. You can introduce naysayers which is other people that may disagree too. Check if you used metcommentary to clarify what you do or dont mean. Checking if you tied everything together in transitions well. And then check if you have shown why your argument matters in the first place. These are important steps to take to revise any paper or essay so your readers or audience will have the ability to posssibly understand you.
In the chapters I learned that it is possible that readers may not understand you. So you should think about the revision steps more so you have a complete revised paper.

the creator of the image is burger king. A lot of food chains tend to have sexual desires underneath to persuade men to buy the food and eat it. The intended message is to try and get people to eat their food. I believe the image is persuasive because they make the burger look good. and with the woman wanting to eat makes the men want to eat it. the image uses ethos to appeal to desires. The intended audience is men and female they want the burger to appeal to men by making it look good and having a woman’s mouth open as a a sexual reference and then they appeal to woman because a woman is intended to the sandwich in the picture. The picture is being shown to the audience in a comedy setting. Most will understand what the picture is representing which will catch peoples attention. Therefore making them eat the product. The semiotic elements include the color in the picture the color is yellow and some hint of red causing the picture to have substance to where the audience will easily see it. the positioning of the burger and the woman make it a funny sexual reference which makes it have more appeal. the setting is pretty basic keeping it simple. the facial expression of the woman is surprised and ready to eat. the objects is a person and a sandwich. the hair and makeup of the girl is simple so it doesn’t draw away for the sandwich.
this is a feminist article right? On a serious note men do tend to be the leaders of everything. They have the old pressures of being the provider and the muscle of the family. In the article the text talks about how commercials attract men attention with sexy images of a woman doing just about anything so he will feel more of a desire to indulge into that product. But is this traditional commonly known way of thinking the actual truth.? I don’t want to merely summarize the article to get to the point it discusses different techniques that food chains use to attract the male brain for consumption. But what I would like to discuss is how has it changed over time? to be more on the female side there are plenty and I mean plenty of commercials that are trying to sell makeup, hair products, age recovery, weight loss, food products, that are constantly trying to be sold. The article its self was a little contradicting, as to why I am creating a new focus question. What are the overall techniques of selling products? is it really just focused on men nowadays? or has it veered more towards woman? I believe iv seen more commercials for woman’s desires then I have for a man in a 4 min time span.

“Three Ways to Respond”
This chapter explains how you will respond to an argument and the three ways you may respond to an argument. One of the response options could be stating your opinion to the argument first hand, before you go into more context. such as “I agree, I disagree, or I am of two minds.” says the authors. This way people will know exactly what you will discussing, or arguing about. Another way is “Disagreeing and explain why” when you disagree with something you may have more to go with or talk about. When you disagree with something you have to tell your audience why you disagree, you should not just state your opinion and then end the argument. “You need to do more than simply assert that you disagree with a particular view; you also have to offer persuasive reasons why you disagree” says the authors. The other type of response is “Agree but with a difference”. “it’s important to bring something new and fresh to the table, adding something that makes you a valuable participant in the conversation.” says the authors. What they are explaining is that when you agree with whomever point, you could agree but then maybe ask a question about a point to give yourself individuality. It may be an opening to another argument as well.
“Distinguishing What You Say from What They Say”
Determine who and what is saying in whatever you are reading. You have to know who is talking and what they might be trying to say, so you can understand as a reader. The word choice of “I” is acceptable. We should be making persuasive arguments in any necessary form we need to in order to persuade.
“Planting a Naysayer in Your Text”
“Anticipate objections” “We are arguing you to tell readers what others might say against you, but point is that doing so will actually enhance your credibility, not undermine it.” When doing this you are pointing out maybe rumored flaws and owning up to them being true or false which shows a sense of character. When objecting something you should represent that objection in a fair manner. As well as sticking with your objections for a couple sentences you should answer any objections.
“Saying Why It Matters”
you should always answer the question “who cares” when making an argument. This gives it meaning. You should also answer the question “So what? This is why it is important and why the audience should care. For people who already know why it is important you will then try to be in more detail and explain steps to prevent. If need be.
In these chapters they were easily understood by myself. We have been taught this stuff our whole lives I believe. Or maybe not taught but we have seen or heard people arguing so it may come natural to us. We just never had a technical term or label over the individual parts. These chapters helped me dissect what really is going on in an argument.
Evidently– (see what I did there) evidence is the thing that makes our world go round. People can not be prosecuted for a crime without valid evidence. Humans just simply tend to not believe in anything unless there is evidence. The only exception to that really is religion, but that another topic.
As the author says “evidence is immensely central to our lives. We rely on it in science to expand or technological capacity and advance our understanding of the world. We rely on it in journalism to keep us accurately informed and to hold individuals and institutions accountable for their actions. We rely on it in politics to determine which laws to pass, which policies to implement, and which wars to fight. And we rely on it in medicine to sustain or health and save our lives.” Evidence makes our world go round.
Sometimes in life evidence can be sqewed with what is factual. In today’s society there is plenty of fake news to go around for everyone. We all have to train ourselves in whats factual and whats non-factual. We live in a consumers world. Where everyone and their dog is trying to sell something to us. There are plenty of people in this world who are habitual spenders and do not look at the evidence behind the product they are investing in. A lot of the times the product isn’t what you thought it would be. A big example of this is people who sell items on eBay, but potentially sell you the wrong thing. Because its their job to hustle you and rip you off. Like the author says “Language, categories, causality, psychology; without expertise in these domains, we would be sunk. And without inductive reasoning- the capacity to reach very big conclusions based on very little data – we would never gain the expertise.” He is saying that we have to have inductive reasoning in order to have or own evidence. Not everything in the world comes with it. The only other thing I want to respond to, is how we respond to evidence. My mother is always listening to her father and his views/beliefs but, she tends to forget that those are his individual thoughts and that she needs to create her own,and not always have to agree with what he is saying. If you are presented with evidence or maybe just he say or she say then you have to have the ability to formulate your own intellectual conclusions. I am constantly arguing with my younger brother about random things, because he will make an accusation or state something, but i’m like Where is the evidence where is the credibility where did you get your information? Evidence is extremely important for people to have in order to not get scammed in today’s society.
When I think about perception I tend to think about politics. Democrat or Republican? Liberal or independent? They each have their own set of perceptions and beliefs. One side will have “selective perception” to the other side. For example my grandfather is a republican, and he solely watches only fox news which is a more conservative news channel compared to CNN which can be considered a more democratic news channel. He doesn’t watch CNN because their tone inst for conservative beliefs. The article has three main topics that it covers such as selective retention, selective attention and selective exposure. Selective exposure is a theory based off of psychology basically saying that a person will favor information that reinforces their preexisting views while avoiding anything that may be the opposite. Like my grandfather his choice of only watching fox news could be in the theory of selective exposure. We can also discuss selective attention, when this comes to mind I think about being in an argument with someone and you have plenty of points but the other person will only reply or give attention to one point, this sometimes is called selective hearing as well. Selective attention is when you choose to only focus on one thing, and disregard everything else that may be occurring. Finally the article talks about selective retention in other words is the process of only remembering messages that correlate or correspond with an individuals beliefs or values. For example I tend to only remember quotes that correlate with what I believe, “Speak only if it improves upon the silence” Gandhi. I tend to stay quite because there’s really nothing important or mind exploding going on up in my head, or maybe its something that I’ve learned because I used to talk so much about absolutely nothing that held no substance whatsoever to what I was saying. I digress, The article helped me to understand more in detail why my grandfather only watches Fox news. Why politics only see their sides as the right side, Am I really seeing you? or what I want to see of you? perception can be so interesting when you think about it in communications Its very important for the world to be able to have the ability to perceive each other as what it really is. Media has come to make things very difficult with all the “fake news” and propaganda that floats around on the web. On the other hand it helps information to be passed on very quickly. Its up to the people to have the ability to stay opened minded and know whats real or fake.
